Snow and a hankering for hot chocolate go hand-in-hand. So, yesterday while we enjoyed looking out at the winter wonderland outside, Frankie and I made hot chocolate with candy-cane marshmallows. Thank goodness my mom was over because making anything with a toddler is always a bit bonkers.

We dunked the marshmallows into semi-sweet chocolate melted in the microwave, dipped them into candy canes that I had crushed using our coffee grinder (mental note: I need a food processor), and put them on parchment-lined trays to dry. We made our hot chocolate to taste using roughly a 1:2 ratio of cocoa to sugar, mixed with a bit of cold milk, then topped up with hot milk. We stored leftover marshmallows in the freezer for when we have another hankering for hot chocolate, which will probably be later today, and every subsequent day until the marshmallows are gone.
This past summer, I hosted my sister’s bachelorette with her best friend. There was lots to do and it was great organizing the big day alongside someone. After a few calls and many texts, the day’s plans were decided: start at my house for snacks, bubbles, and games; load ourselves into a party bus and head to the Deighton Cup; before dinner, and finally dancing at the classic Roxy Nightclub.
After planning this epic day, I realized there were four key parts that helped make the day go smoothly…
While my oldest sister was visiting this summer she whipped up the most amazing ladies’ tea for a few family friends. She’s always been quite the entertainer, so I wasn’t surprised by how beautifully it turned out. I was amazed, however, at how quick and easy she made it look to put on such a spread. Maria’s Basics for a Successful Tea
To enjoy a proper afternoon tea you have to enjoy the finer things in life and a little old world charm. Seems obvious when you are cutting crusts off of 12 cucumber sandwiches. You want your guests to sit down and not think. The sugar is within reach, so are the lemon slices. When coming up with a guest list try to think of who will be happy to simply sit around and enjoy each other’s company.

What a week it’s been. Amidst the usual chaos, I was incredibly excited to attend the Vancouvermom.ca Top 30 Blogger Celebration at Roundhouse Radio. It was a great celebration and it felt so nice to be involved in a gathering of women who enjoy sharing their stories and talents through the blogosphere; a place that still feels incredibly new to me. It was very surreal to be included among the VM Top 30 list this year and I plan to share a post about the experience soon. This weekend, I hope to take it easy while also working on some writing I’ve had on the go for a while. This will likely take place in between the many random Craigslist wheelings and dealings that I seem to have involved myself in while getting things together for the new nursery. I wasn’t totally convinced before, but I now officially believe nesting is a real phenomenon.
It took me a while to get into Instagram, but now that I’m on board I really love it. It’s simple to use and a great tool for when I need an occasional zone-out. Currently, one of my favourite Instagram pastimes is scrolling through delicious food pics. Usually I look under the tag #foodporn (important note: do not browse this while hungry). Here are few delectable food trends that I’d like to try making, or, more importantly, that I’d like to try eating:
1)The Donut Milkshake
I feel confident I can make this so long as I buy the donut (likely from my favourite: Cartem’s Donuterie). The donut milkshake looks over the top, but in its defense, it is two desserts in one. In theory, I could share one of these with my hubby after a small dinner. In reality, I will probably enjoy an entire one to myself after a regular sized dinner. I’m thinking of trying out this recipe.
2) Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches
These seem a little more difficult to make because there’s actual baking involved. However, if there’s a recipe I think I’ve mastered, it’s the classic chocolate chip cookie. Making these would just involve the additional glorious step of adding ice cream. I like the guidance offered here for perfecting these.
3) A Naked Cake
Both my sister and good friend are planning weddings right now, so I’ve been paying attention to wedding cake trends. I’ve noticed that the “naked” wedding cake has become one of the most popular styles. I like the idea of making naked cakes because the icing process seems more forgiving than the traditional way of icing a cake. Usually, I mess up icing by spreading crumbs everywhere while trying to cover up bits of cake peeking through. A more rustic icing style would work way better for me. This recipe sounds incredible.
