Blackout

Once, when I was a kid, the power unexpectedly went out while I was at my friend’s house for a sleepover. We were forced to scrap our original plan of watching movies, eating popcorn, and playing Donkey Kong. Instead we lit candles, played board games, and ate whatever snacks and concoctions we could come up with that didn’t need heating. The night ended up being so much fun that we tried to recreate it a few times. It never really panned out though because convincing parents to go without power for entire evenings proved difficult.

I realized the other night how nice it would be to plan a “blackout” date night or family night. Sometimes, it’s impossible to try and unplug yourself, when everyone around you is still plugged in. Next week Joe and I are planning to have a night to ourselves without power, media, or phone distractions. We are going to sit by candlelight, drink wine, talk, play board games, and do whatever else there is to do in the dark.

Who knows? Maybe this will become a monthly date night tradition.

What are your random date/family night ideas?
